ICING MIX #8

TECHNICAL BULLETIN
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
WINTERSTONE Icing mix is an extra fine dry white powder and has increased strength, toughness and bonding properties.
Although the Icing mix may be used on its own to produce a highly polishable integrated veneer to a modelled or cast sculpture, it was designed and formulated primarily to be used with higher concentrations of metallic powders to produce a richer patinated metallic effect.
A metallic powder content of 1 part to 3 parts (volumetrically) of Icing mix is recommended and will produce a rich metallic effect sufficient for most purposes -- however, a richer mixture may be used if desired. It may be used as the "face" coat in lay-up casting or as the final surface layering(s) on a directly modelled sculpture. For casting applications a "face" thickness of 1/16" is recommended. For sculpting applications where sanding (and/or rasping) may follow, a thickness of 1/8" is recommended.
The mixing procedure consists of adding 1 part water to 4 parts total dry mixture (volumetrically), mixing for a couple of minutes to break up any lumps and then let mixture "rest" for 1 - 2 minutes before remixing. This will produce a "trowelable" consistency with 45 - 60 minutes pot life. If a "brushable" consistency (equivalent to a thick syrup) is desired, a small amount of additional water will be required and will have a "brushable" pot life of only 10 minutes more or less. No additional water should be added after this interval to either re-temper or maintain fluidity.
The surface of the sculpture should be roughened by serrating, rasping or course grit sanding and then dampened before applying the fresh Icing mixture. (Note: It is good practice in sculpting with WINTERSTONE to always serrate each and every layer while building up the sculpture. This technique, if done properly is easy to do and allows the sculptor to take out any "bumps/valleys" in the surface contour while the mixture is relatively plastic; and as a bonus leaves a uniformly rough surface with excellent "mechanical" bonding characteristics for any follow up layers.)
Approximately 10 - 15 minutes after the Icing mixture has been applied to the recommended thickness -- whether by mini trowel or brush -- the surface may be "smoothed" further using a stiff sponge, rubber pad or foam board -- again, no water should be added to the surface during this operation.
When using the Icing mix in the casting process, the "face" coat is brushed onto the mold surface to the recommended thickness. It is immediately followed up, while damp and tacky, with the back up mixture (refer to Casting 2000 Technical Bulletin for details.)
After a couple of days of air drying the hardened surface may be wet or dry sanded (#325 or finer) to the desired smoothness and then the patinating/polishing process can be carried out.
The final sealing of the surface depends on the effect desired and the environmental
exposure (refer to the respective Technical Bulletins for details.)
